I have finally chosen a design for Isaiah's quilt. We are dealing with Hurricane Irene this morning. We didn't get the word that church was canceled and headed out on schedule to be turned back by flooding and a large tree across the road. So, I decided it would be a good morning to get this project going. The actual sewing won't begin until winter. Quilting is a great endeavor for cold weather days.
When my grandchildren turn 3 years old they get there first quilt made especially for them by GrammaSusie. I never know what I'm going to do. I just pour through designs until something "speaks" to me. When I saw this design called, "Breeches", I immediately thought of Isaiah. He is the absolute cutest little boy in his long all-boy shorts! He has an adorable shape. He reminds me so much of Cedric. He walks the same way and it just cracks me up. He is a very sturdy little boy with seemingly perfect balance. When he jumps on the trampoline he doesn't even stumble. I took the photo below of Hunter and Isaiah one day when we were walking to the farm. They made my heart happy just watching them walk along hand in hand with their long, baggy shorts!
I renamed this quilt, "Britches", because that is the term we would use in this area of the country. I will have to add another row of blocks both ways in order to make it large enough, bringing the total to 30, as opposed to 20, and maybe another row yet on the long side, making a total of 35.
Each block of pairs of britches will be a different fabric, with the connecting fabric (beige in the example) all being the same, but probably not a beige tone.
The border will probably not be pieced. I will probably keep that all one fabric, maybe with a couple of inch inner border, and a wider, 6 inch or so outside border. Possibly a corner block on each corner.
I'm not exactly sure of the color scheme yet. It will depend on what fabrics I find when I get to the fabric store. I will probably pick out the connecting and the border fabrics, and then raid my own stash of fabric as well for the "britches".
The block design is not simple, but not super hard. I'm anxious to get started now!
